Age of Stars Requiem pt.2

Travelling to Mohgywn Palace should have taken more time than it did but her paws ate up the distance quickly, and since Mohg was no longer in residence she did not have the hassle of having to unlock it like the others did. Traversing the Consecrated Snowfield was easy for her as her fur kept the worst of it off her and most of the creatures here got out of her way as she could easily tear them to pieces with no consequence, it didn’t take much for her to find the teleporter that would spit her out close to where she needed to be. Shifting back to her demi-human form she looked around before stepping onto the stone and closed her eyes. The stench hit her nose as soon as she entered the lands of the former Lord of Blood, there were still Strays and Putrid corpses, but they were easily dealt with using her flames. She was worried about contracting Rot, but it was a risk she had to take, and the risk would increase when she returned Miquella and sealed his tree.

The palace was still as run down as it had been so long ago if what her mother had told her was true, Mohg had been so concerned with rising Miquella that he had not thought about the world he was bring the male into. Shaking her head, she stepped on the rise and rolled her head on her shoulders, it should be an easy task, but her gut was clenching and her mind screaming for her to run the other way, but she was not about to turn down a chance to return home without restraints and her child. Synestra was not a newly born pup and knew there was something her mother had been hiding from her when she set her on this task as it was too simple to pull Syn so forcefully for and she hated not knowing the full details, but she was prepared to handle whatever came at her. As the lift arrived at the stop, she stepped off to be greeted by one of the black knives who bowed to her, communicating in a series of complex hand signs before disappearing again “Shit…” she muttered knowing her hunch had been correct.

The loss of Mohg had been felt beyond the Lands Between and even when Ranni had remade the world and left the grasp of the Greater Will another had been closely watching and waiting for the perfect time to strike. Now Syn could stop here and turn away allowing Miquella to be taken and remain alive or she could continue down the path she was on and possibly not make it home. Leaning her head back she laughed darkly looking at the cavernous sky with tears in her eyes “I fucked up…I am sorry loves…” she sent out to the universe hoping her love and words got back to them. Raising her hand to her lips she kissed the ring Ulric had given her so many years ago, letting her lips linger for a moment as tears fell down her face, sending her love through the realms to the first man to ever lay siege to her heart. Next, her lips found the ring that matched Astaria’s, the girl would be pissed all to hell when she found out what happened, but she prayed to whatever was out there that she would not lose herself. Next her hand found the miniature rose bracelet that was curled around her wrist, its thorns digging into her skin. Dante would be a problem, but he had Asta to keep him centered, at least she hoped so. She hoped the three of them would lean on the other if she did not make it out of this alive, if she did, she had a feeling she would not ever let them go. The twins would rage, there would be no stopping them until they were taken down one way or another, she hated having not brought them with her as this was their purpose, but she hadn’t had time first of all and now that she was facing possible death she didn’t want that for them.

Taking a deep breath, she squared her shoulders and walked into the ruined palace. As soon as she crossed the threshold, she bolted down the aisle towards the massive cocoon at the end of the aisle. She felt them as soon as they appeared and while the black knives did their best to hold them off, they would soon fall but it would give her enough time to reach Miquella. Climbing the steps, she broke through the shielding and placed her hand on the hand that hung outside the crack, a pained cry escaping her lips as she took in all the magic from him that she could. Her veins lit up like a lightning rod and her eyes shone brightly, the smell of burning skin filled the air and was soon mixed with the scent of Rot as her body became infected causing her to fall to the ground panting but keeping contact with the Empyrean. Tears streamed down her face as she gripped his hand as she heard fighting behind her, as each assassin was killed, she felt each of their lives snuff out; they would be reborn eventually but not in time to save her. Her lips moved quickly, the air around her growing thick with magic as she formed the transport spell, as the fighting behind her grew silent her lips moved quicker knowing she didn’t have much time left before her adversaries turned their attention back to her. Syn didn’t even attempt to shield herself because it would take too much of her power away as she knew she couldn’t stop what was going to happen. It was a contradiction in her eyes, her mother had sought out to release herself from her destiny and had wanted the same for her daughter but then turned around and forced Syn down a path that was going to kill her.

Suddenly Syn felt two spirit blades pass through her back to press against the edge of her source and  the world went silent. It felt like the world stopped around them, watching and waiting to see what would happen. A gurgle escaped her lips before she coughed, blood spurting between her lips onto the hand of Miquella which she refused to let go of. She had drained most of his pent-up magic and the spell to save him was almost complete, but Syn now knew it was never him they were after. The betrayal hurt worse than the blades that pressed against her source, threatening to end her entire existence with a single move. Her mind played back the conversation with her mother, but she couldn't find a reason she would send her only child here; into a trap to die. But Syn was determined to at least finish this part of her mission, if she died here, she hoped her child would be returned to Ulric so he would have a part of her. As Miquellas cocoon disappeared leaving Syn kneeling, the hand of Miquella slipping out of her grasp she felt the faintest grasp from the Empyrean and it made her smile slightly. He would live and hopefully one day he would be freed from both of his curses. As she struggled to turn and face her attacker she felt another blade pressing to her neck  "Reckless creature. Always want but never find..." a male voice came from behind her, "Precious diamond to be mine...." came a female voice from the same direction. It took a moment for her brain to push pass the pain and danger she was in to put a name to the voices "Elyonath Noxwre...I see you have switched sides again..."

Elyonath Noxwre was a severely obscure creation that had existed in the lands between for as long as they had been. A creature of one body yet two distinct minds one had never known who they would get, where Noxwre was the more level headed and the female of the two who could be talked too, Elyonath was a pure bastard with no care for anyone aside from himself and his lover. Letting a little of her magic touch the being behind her she cringed, Elyonath had been tainted it seemed, their shadows ran much deeper now and from what she could tell their mind was in a frenzy against their nature. She felt as they knelt down next to her still holding the knife, a tongue running along the shell of her ear “Now lets play a game….” Came the males voice once again before the shadows around them swallowed them both up. For a moment all Syn could see was darkness but she could feel Elyonath’s hands on her form, it seemed whatever had tainted them had cured them of their aversion to physical touch….what a joy for Syn. It could have been hours, or days but it felt like moments until they stood in a spotlight with a large table between them. Looking up she sneered at the creature, groaning as the blades pressed more on her source. They held up their hand looking at Syn “We will give you two guesses as to who holds our domain. Should you fail, well…” the blades scrapped a bit more making her sweat “If you win we release you to claim the prize..” Holding up their other hand a vision of a full moon appeared, inside the moon slept a small wolf and Syns heart shattered as black fingers wrapped around the moon, gripping it until the wolf pup squirmed in discomfort. Her rage boiled at the thought of her child being harmed and she looked away glaring at the creature “Fine!” she said holding out her hand “Zecht!” she said sealing the contract.

Four cards appeared infront of her with multiple shadowed figures on it, the few she knew should have no command over the realm or Elyonath but the last was unknown to her. Biting her lip she began thinking. Elyonath hummed as Syn thought, due to her connection to Ulric and the war his people waged against the Phyrexians it was possible one of their higherups had slipped through the realms to attempt to wrest away control but Syn knew if that was it her mother would have simply told her outright. Baal had been after her ever since her trip to Paradiso when she managed to catch his eye only to slip between his fingers with the help of Dante and they had yet to solve that little issue. She knew she had cleaned up the Cazador issue and left no loose ends with that so she was able to dismiss that card “I know it is not Cazador as my Asta handled that wonderfully” she told them and was delighted when the card went up in flames. “The bitch is smart, we will give her that. But will she figure it out?” came Elyonaths voice making Syn growl but she didn’t give in to the taunts.

There were three remaining and so her chances improved but she didn’t even know the face of the remaining suspect. Her mind ran, her eyes continuing to be drawn to the card depicting Baal, he was the most promising lead but how he had gotten his influence in her home world was a mystery. Racking her brain she tried to remember what Ulric had told her about his own home, but as far as she remembered he never mentioned a central figure leading them. But she did remember they took control with their oil and while she couldn’t see much of Elyonath it had to be for a reason. Deciding it was probably the Phyrexians she tapped the card “The ones who war against my husband and his people. They have taken control of your domains and seek to influence this realm as well” Elyonath laughed shaking their head and Syn cried out falling the ground as one of the blades sliced through her source. She felt her wolf being cut off from her with a mournful howl, the pain she felt was immense and she didn’t know how she would survive without her wolf if she made it out of here. Elyonath watched dispassionately as she stood shakily, bloody tears falling down her face as part of her was cut out of her. Looking at the remaining cards she shook her head slowly she only knew Baal, the female was unknown to her, even as she searched through all her knowledge and memories, she couldn’t place her at all.

Syn knew she had a fifty fifty chance of picking the right one but she still hated those chances because even if she picked correct she would still have to find the source and eliminate it and if it was Baal then she would have to pursue him sooner than planned. If it turned out to be the unknown entity then she would have to figure out who it was and handle the situation which meant she wouldn’t be able to return home anytime soon. Deciding to take a chance she tapped the card with Baal’s face, the second she did it the females form became somewhat clearer and it was then Syn knew she had chosen incorrectly. As Elyonath laughed and Syn felt the last blade slide into her source she could hear the faint laugh of the Formless Mother echoing around them. As her body began to disintegrate and return to the stars tears fell down her face, her child would be in danger as would her home and those waiting for her outside of the realm. Her body soon turned to pure magic as the world around them disappeared, Syn soon felt the embrace of her mother as she was returned to the stars , she would soon lose her consciousness and memories of who she was but in those moments she was able to connect once again with her child. She wrapped her essence around the orb that held the sleeping pup and shooting stars fell across Lunari as Syn mourned the loss of everything she had strived for. She didn’t know how long she remained this way but soon she began to lose hold on herself. Her memories began to disappear as did her awareness of who she was, she released her hold on the moon and began to allow herself to drift back into the nothingness she had come from as her reason for staying faded. The memories of the life she had created faded, the ones she had met became obscure until only a strange longing for the moon remained.

The Lunar Queen
Ranni had watched all that happened up until her daughter was obscured in darkness, she had wondered herself who had infiltrated her lands since she had thought her consort had dealt with those who would oppose her rule or attempt to overtake her but it seemed he had missed one. In truth the Formless Mother or Mother of Truth as she was known by shouldn’t have been an issue once Mohg was taken care of since he had been the one to give her access to the realm but it seemed even after his demise she had persisted and simply been bidding her time to act. As she contemplated these facts she felt the life of her daughter snuff out and return to the heavens above, once again becoming one with the world to become nothing again. But it seemed her attachment to the child was keeping her from completely leaving “I shall grant you life anew my child. And with it another chance to claim your destiny” she whispered as she untethered the moon from its holding, casting her magic to the sky to create a second one to take its place.

Existing with a slight consciousness in nothingness was an odd sensation for her, the ethereal feel of existing but not existing at the same moment was a new one for her. Not something that was on her checklist but why not. ”Child of my child. I am so sorry to see you here….” the voice was gentle yet commanding, causing Syn to search for its source but the entity was…everywhere. ”I am saddened to see that my childs ambition has led to another death. First her own mother, then the others of her people. Now her own child. Such wasted blood. Such lost potential…”the voice continued. Syn soon felt her essence being cradled, the feeling was the caress of a mother, one Syn had wished to feel all her life but was never given “Who are you? How do you know of me?” she asked the disembodied voice. A whispery laugh surrounded her as a golden egg appeared in the middle of the darkness ”It seems my existence was fully wiped out, my history and name no longer spoken…I am Rennala. True Queen of the Full Moon and the secrets it holds…”

Something tugged at her memory, a day when she had pilfered through her mothers scrolls before being caught. Ranni’s consort had defeated Rennala in his quest to appease the Lunar Queen. Rennala had remained to serve the tarnished’s whims of change but had soon been fully destroyed and her shard had disappeared before any could collect it. That was the golden orb Syn now saw before her, the Great Rune of the Unborn. Her essence reached out to caress the orb and she felt power radiating off of it, the surge caused part of her to surge back into being causing her to cry out into the void. ”Remaking what was torn asunder is never pleasant nor easy my sweet child. But in order to right what was done to you and to stop my child from continuing to use those around her you must make the choice. Return to nothing and remain here, or take this power and break the chains that hold you…” Syn did not even need to think about it, her life had been ruled by her mother for so long now she was tired of it; her child had been taken and kept from her and now she had fully died to serve her mothers will. Steeling herself she reached out again to the shard “I will do whatever it takes..” she answered as she wrapped herself around the orb. Her cries echoed around her as she held onto the golden egg, the essence of Rennala wrapped around Syn resting around her shoulders as Syn curled around the egg holding it close much like Rennala had done in the past. The power that infused her body was like nothing Syn had felt before and Syn knew she was no longer a demi-being, she was transcending to a new level and becoming the Lunar Goddess reborn.  ”Take this power child, and with it write your own story free of the chains of this world. My time is done here. But the true power of the full moon will always linger in you and yours..”Tears fell from her eyes as Syn felt her grandmother, the one who although they had never truly met saved her; drifted away fully as Syn took in her power.

The darkness around her suddenly vanished, the moon in which her child rested appearing before her, Syn brought her child into her arms holding her close smiling as tears dripped down her face. The stars in the sky blazed brightly; briefly turning the night into day with their brilliance before it went completely dark save for a single figure drifting through the night holding the moon in her grasp. Slowly she drifted through the sky until she rested on the ground still clutching the moon to her, a small hand pressed to the edge of the orb before disappearing again “Soon darling…soon” she whispered before her teal hues found her mother, betrayal still stinging in her veins.

Standing she clutched the moon to her chest and held her head high, no longer cowering before the Lunar Queen. “The Formless Mother has a foothold in these lands, I have died enough to service your will and now the power of the full moon flows through my veins. The late Queen of the Full Moon, your own mother; has blessed me with her domain” Syns voice was much more powerful now and she stood straighter, the moon in her arms blazed brightly to match the power in Syns eyes, the runes that lined her neck glowed briefly only to have a dark line crossed through all of them, negating Ranni’s ability to force summon Syn home anymore. To any who saw her they would think Rennala had been reborn and maybe they were right, but this time there would be none to slay her “I will take my vengeance against the Formless Mother for what she has wrought here. But it will not be for your sake nor the sake of these lands. It will be for my child and those I love for she is a threat to them all” Syn declared. Ranni simply listened to her daughters would and a small smile could be seen if only briefly before she nodded “As you wish, daughter mine.”

Syn did not believe for a moment that her mother would allow her to roam freely forever, but with her grandmothers power flowing through her she would be able to one day fully break the leash that held her to this realm. Holding out her hand she called to her the staff Rennala once held, holding it aloft she proclaimed to this world and all worlds “I am Synestra Na’Ranni Lunaria-Kord. Wolven Goddess of the Full moon, I hereby claim the power of my grandmother Lunar Queen Rennala as is my right! None shall hide from my gaze and none shall hide from the judgment of the lunar light!” The light around her and her child grew bright again until the both of them disappeared in what seemed like a shattering of the sky.

  The end….for now.
